MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (June 19, 2017) – The Town of Mount Pleasant is in the final stages of rehabilitating stormwater pipes in the Rivertowne on the Wando neighborhood. The $675,000 project is 90 percent complete and has cleaned 3,720 linear feet of pipes and lined 2,367 linear feet.
“Approximately 70 percent of the neighborhood pipes were identified for rehabilitation and we are pleased to announce the near completion of one of our latest capital improvement projects,” said Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page. “The Town is committed to protecting public health and safety through the effective management of our stormwater system designed to reduce flooding and safeguard the environment.”
The Town rehabilitates existing pipes by installing internal liners to seal the broken joints and cracks. New technologies allow underground pipe inspection to be conducted with a video camera to avoid disruption to the road or surface above. Staff reviews the footage to assess the most critical needs and determines the necessary repair methods. The end goal of the pipe rehabilitation project is to extend the stormwater system’s useful life for an additional 50 years.
As part of the CIP, the Town has spent $3.2 million dollars cleaning and inspecting nine miles of infrastructure and rehabilitating nearly five miles of pipe. Other rehabilitation projects include Wando East, Wando Lakes and emergency repairs from major storm events. Next year, the program will address a large project in Snee Farm as well as pipe failure issues throughout the community.
About the Capital Improvement Plan
The Town of Mount Pleasant Capital Improvement emphasizes the Town’s commitment to its capital needs and totals almost $50 million dollars for fiscal year 2018. The Capital Improvement Plan is a five-year plan updated annually. Projects are ranked by the Mayor and Town Council, and funding plans are set in place and ultimately approved each fiscal year. As most projects tend to span multiple years, funding remains active and is carried forward to each new budget until a project is completed. The Town of Mount Pleasant is committed to funding major transportation and stormwater infrastructure improvements, which combined are 85% of the total CIP budget, along with the continued effort to maintain Town facilities and other assets to create a more sustainable community for citizens.
