MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (May 15, 2018) – Mount Pleasant Mayor Will Haynie met today with South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster in Columbia and discussed the closure of the I-526 Wando Bridge and the traffic impacts on Mount Pleasant.
“Governor McMaster is fully involved in the matter and has promised complete support towards reopening the westbound Wando Bridge,” said Mayor Haynie. “While work is underway, we urge our residents to exercise caution and give themselves extra time to travel during morning and evening peak hours. Modify your commute time and leave early – 15 to 20 minutes can make a big difference.”
Mayor Haynie will also be contacting the largest employers in the town, suggesting flex time for non-essential personnel. As a major employer, the Town is taking the lead and will offer its employees flex time hours to lessen the impact on the transportation infrastructure and aid with productivity.
Additional officers (to include the Highway Patrol and the Charleston County Sheriff Office) have been called to help Mount Pleasant Police Department relieve traffic congestion. Officers at major intersections are controlling the traffic lights to assist with traffic flow.
Motorists are urged to use alternate roads while commuting in Mount Pleasant:
- Highway 41 to Clements Ferry Road to I-526
- Highway 17 south to the Ravenel Bridge to I-26
