The Town of Mount Pleasant Comprehensive Plan Update
What’s a Comprehensive Plan?
A Comprehensive Plan is a local government’s guide for decision making. It is created by studying the existing conditions of the Town, debating preferred future alternatives and priorities, and identifying practical implementation strategies to help the Town reach its preferred future goals. There are nine required “elements” that every Comprehensive Plan must address – population, housing, economic development, community facilities, natural resources, cultural resources, land use, transportation, and priority investments. Thus, the Comprehensive Plan touches land development decisions, capital projects, and many other governmental decisions that might impact the future health of the Town. In South Carolina, communities are required to prepare new Comprehensive Plans every 10 years. Considering the tremendous growth that the area has experienced over the past several years, Town Council decided to move the process up a year, to help town government identify and address its greatest needs.
What’s going on now
The Plan Forum's most recent meeting was held on September 6. At this meeting, they held discussions on the first draft of the Plan. Plan Forum members identified topics they wanted to hold further discussions on. At this September meeting, they discussed affordable housing issues and hubs. Revisions are being made to the draft based upon these discussions for their future consideration
(Updated October 10, 2018)
Staff and consultants have been working on revisions to the draft Plan, based upon the Plan Forum's feedback. They will consider these modifications, as well as hold a discussion on Transportation issues at their upcoming meeting on October 16. At this point, this is the last scheduled meeting of the Plan Forum. They could consider making a recommendation to the Planning Commission at this meeting, or schedule another Plan Forum meeting, if they need more time to discuss necessary modifications to the Plan.
Once the Plan Forum has made their recommendation, the Town will schedule another Open House to receive feedback on the recommended Plan. The date will be advertised as soon as it is available.
