Maritime Incident Response

Team Responsibilities

The department participates in the MIRT (Marine Incident Response Team), which is a countywide response team created to address maritime emergencies including shipboard firefighting. It is acknowledged that a maritime emergency could overwhelm a single agency and that a multiagency approach provides a more effective response. In addition, it would be cost prohibitive for a single agency to train and equip personnel for emergencies of this magnitude.

The CCHMD has received grants to acquire specialized equipment and to send personnel to advanced training. A MIRT trailer is equipped with specialized equipment such as dewatering appliances, an exothermic torch, personal protective equipment (PPE), piercing equipment, portable pumps, high expansion foam genertor, thermal image cameras with image transmitting capabilities, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
